Sochi
is an excellent place to experience Russian culture up close. Performances
and buildings are closer to each other with fewer lines. Many of Russia's
big-name theater groups, singers, and performers tour through Sochi in
the summer months. And there are numerous local groups of interest also.
All of them can be seen with little hassle and at a much lower price than
in other cities.
The
Winter Theater is a majestic old theater where many classical performances
can be seen. It is centrally located by the shore and Hotel Zhemchuzina.
The seats are comfortable and there are several box seats available.
Tickets are usually affordable, with most shows costing between $1-5,
although some performances can cost $25 or more.
You
should also consider going to the Circus while in Sochi. It is located
in a grand circular building on the main strip, just across from the
Dendrary Arboretum. Many fine circus acts from around Russia and Eastern
Europe come to stage spectacular performances here.
At
the Festival Hall you can catch many of Russia's famous singers. Russian
performers are marvelous to watch! They are more realistic and attuned
to the audience as individuals than most western stars are. Often fans
will run up on the stage to present flowers or gifts to their favorite
stars. A large hill of flowers will usually accumulate by the end of
the night. The hall itself is a comfortable place to see a show. It
overlooks the sea and is open sided, so a nice breeze keeps the audience
cool.
In
1997 the Theater of Beauty reopened in their newly remodeled location
at the Stereo Theater. The Theater of Beauty is an acclaimed local group
which models new fashions and hair styles, along with some contemporary
performances. Besides providing space for the fashion theater, in a
separate hall, Stereo Theater also shows old Russian 3-D movies.
There is also a small fashion theater in our
downtown section. Mini-Max presents more street-clothes fashions designed
by local talent.
The
Ostrovsky Museum is also a place for which you should make time. It
is a museum dedicated to one of our famous poets that not only preserves
his works, but also exhibits in several galleries other artists’
works. Out front of the museum is the home where Ostrovsky lived and
worked. The house tour will give you a good feeling for the times in
which he lived.
Not
far from the Winter Theater is the Sochi City Museum. The story of our
city is shown here along with a sampling of the local fauna and wildlife.
Facing
Uncle Lenin is our Art Museum. Sochi's art museum provides an ever-changing
show of local, national, and international artists. This is also one
of the places where you can find antiques and local artists' works for
sale.
And
finally, don't forget our architecture! There are many splendid and historic
buildings along our coast. They can be seen on one of the many excursions
that can be arranged for you.
